Baby Madness

So it was Hayley's first birthday yesterday! Sherry and George threw her an amazing party at their place and invited a lot of their friends who also have babies. I don't think I've ever seen so many babies all in one place before. There was loads of delicious food - a pasta salad, little pizzas, another type of salad brought by a friend of theirs, potato salad, Sherry's amazing lasagna and chicken caccitori (sp?). Then there were three cakes - a butterfly-shaped one that Sherry baked for Hayley, a caramel cake, and the to-die-for "Holy Cow" cake (so named because you take one bite and say "Holy Cow" because it's so amazing).

At the party, I got one of the most meaningful compliments I've ever been given by one of Sherry's friends, June, who is also a mother. She, Sherry and I were standing near the kitchen and she pointed to me and said to my sister, "She's really great with babies". Sherry said that I have the magic pendant (a necklace I always wear that ALL kids seem to love to fondle, chew on or put in my mouth). June smiled, stroked my hair and said, "No, it's more than that." Wow. Honestly, I think it's Hayley that's made me so comfortable with babies now. She's forced me to drop that stupid barrier that makes you not want to look "stupid". I no longer care what I look like as I make faces, dance around and make funny sounds around kids. It's really quite liberating.

We got home at about 10 pm, sat around chatting about how much we all enjoyed the party and then I headed off to bed. It was a good day all around.

In Friday's entry, I realize that I allowed my anger at that stupid company I used to work for cloud over my excitement about the job I interviewed for. It's an immigration law firm in Old Montreal, and the job sounds absolutely wonderful. The president of the firm seemed really nice, and thankfully he's one of those people who realize that you're not going to know everything the second you walk in the door. He has no problem training people. I'd be doing consultations on the phone with people who want to emigrate to Canada, filling out very detailed applications (covering basically everything they've done since they were born), as well as trying to find ways to bring in more clients.

The pay is reasonable. It's $9 an hour for base salary, plus commission and bonuses. The bonuses are given once or twice a year, and they're awarded based on being punctual, hard work, etc. The commission sounds amazing too - he wants me to find ways to bring in new clients, whether through advertising or by attending meetings held for immigrants who wish to become Canadian citizens. He told me that a case can cost $3000-5000, so out of that I could end up making $1000 commission, on top of my 9 bucks an hour. Eeee!

But the pay isn't even the thing. What's so attractive is the actual job. It's an issue I genuinely care about. I love helping people in any way I can, and that's what I'd be doing in this case.

At least I know that this time, I made my interest VERY clear in the interview. He told me I gave a good interview, and that they would be cutting the eligible candidates down to 10% and those selected for a second interview would be contacted in 7 to 10 days. So, cross your fingers that I'll get a call.

And now I'm off to do some work on my book. It's been a really good weekend.
