2003-09-07 The New Job - Reality Check I'll try to explain this as quickly as I can, as my supper is almost ready. It looks like I'll be staying at this new job probably only until the end of this week. See, they're screwing me over (probably). They don't take off taxes, which I mentioned in my last entry as an annoying but not so terrible fact. But thank god for my uncle coming to spend the weekend up north when we were there, and thank god he used to be a CA and a controller, because come April, I would've been in for a big and nasty surprise. See, there's the issue of the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and Employment Insurance (EI). Normally, a company will take off a certain amount from my check with the taxes for each of these, and then the company has to MATCH that amount and pay to the QPP and EI. Chances are, at this company, I'm considered to be "self-employed", which means that I would have to pay double what I normally would because I'd have to cover what the company isn't paying out. This is all legal, of course, but damn shitty to say the least. And I flat-out refuse to do that. I don't think I should have to PAY to have a job. That's not the way I work. So, I'll work this week to get some money (keeping track of what I'll owe in April), quit, and then I'm giving myself 2 weeks to find another job. If it doesn't happen, then I'll try to get a customer service job at my mom's place since they're looking. Only for now, mind you, but at least I'd know that I wouldn't be owing anybody anything at the end of the year. I'll be finding out more tomorrow. So I'll keep you updated. Fucking hell. |
