Quickie

Well, I've sent out a bunch of cvs via email just now, for basic office work. There's only a slim chance that I'll get a proofreading job, and it requires that the guy in charge of hiring actually calls me back or is in the office for more than 5 seconds at a time. Sigh.

One place that's looking is Curtis International, which from their website, appears to be in the entertainment industry; specifically, organizing entertainment for events such as weddings, etc. It might be interesting, although the two numbers on the website are American; as much as I'd like to leave Quebec one day, I don't want it to be quite so soon, and I'm not really sure how much I want to live in the US at this very moment. So, we'll see I guess.

I might have an opportunity to make some extra cash, though, if I choose to take it. My landlady often has university and/or college kids coming from outside Canada to stay with her while they attend one of the colleges or universities in Montreal. A lot of them want to learn more about English grammar, so she thought of me since I live upstairs. I told her I'd have to think about it, since I am applying for full-time jobs and I don't know how much time I'd be able to spare. But she said that I can always back out, that it'd only be for an hour or two a week, and they'd pay me 25 bucks an hour. Even if I only tutor them for an hour a week, that's an extra 100 bucks a month!

The only thing that kinda frightens me is the idea of me teaching someone anything. I think that I have a decent grasp on English grammar, but it just comes naturally, since it's my mother tongue. I know how to construct a sentence, but don't ask me to start picking out random parts of it! Luckily, I followed the advice given to me by a teacher in high school - he told us that we should buy an English grammar book called "The Basics", which he claimed would come in very useful in college and university. I think I cracked it open once, got bored, felt I didn't need it, and never opened it again. I thought I'd wasted my money, but something always told me to keep it when I was cleaning up my shelves.

Now I'm thankful I did, because they have a huge section that I can use if I do this tutoring thing. Exercises and all. Of course, I'll have to come up with more exercises since this book is really meant for college students who have a decent grasp of the English language. I guess it's meant for people like me who just know how to construct a sentence, but not how to teach it to someone else and fully understand grammatical rules.

The only rule I have is that whoever I end up tutoring must have some grasp of the English language. Afterall, I need to be able to carry on a bit of a conversation with this person. They might just need someone to help them with writing and speaking the English words they know.

Anyway, I'm going to think about it a little further before giving my landlady an answer, but I really do appreciate that she thought of me.
