2003-10-17 What a Week How could I have known how strange this week would be after leaving you all on Monday? Allow me to give you a recap. Tuesday: I woke up feeling like crap. I apparently have caught one of the cold viruses that's snaking its way through the area. Runny nose, coughing, sore throat, little energy, etc. I went to my first day at the call center - the project I was on was for Bell ExpressVu, a satellite company. It is the most BORING job I've ever had in my life. For 7 hours, I made call after call after call, saying the same damn thing over and over again (would you like your bill in English or French?). I got home at 10pm, knowing the next couple of weeks would pass VERY SLOWLY. My mom had stayed home from work because on Monday night, she got a really bad headache and one of her eyes was watering like mad. It ended up swelling up a bit. Wednesday: My dad took my mom to the clinic because she thought she had something like a sinus infection. It was a 9:30 appointment, and when I was about ready to leave at 11:30 and they weren't home yet, I started to wonder what had happened. I called the clinic and they put me through to my mom's doctor. Doctor: "Oh, I had to send your mom to the emergency. Here's the number. I can't tell you anything more because it's confidential." My heart starts pounding, so I call the hospital repeatedly because they took their sweet time getting my mom into the system. Finally they told me that she was in the "Minor Emergency". I called in to work and to the placement agency leaving messages that I wouldn't be in because my mother was in emergency and I had no idea why. So I jumped into a taxi and head down to the hospital. And then we all waited. And waited. And waited. Finally at 5pm, she was taken. Turns out she has acute glaucoma. Usually, glaucoma takes awhile to form, but in a few cases, it's really fast, which is what happened to my mom. They decided to keep her overnight at the hospital to try to take some of the pressure down with an IV. Thursday: My dad and I get to the hospital around 10:30 to find that, thankfully, my mom didn't have to spend the entire night in the hall of the emergency, but was brought up to a ward. Somehow she managed to sleep quite well, and she was in better spirits than she had been on Wednesday. Around 3:30pm, the eye doctor did some laser treatment on her two eyes (one wasn't too bad but the pressure was up so she did it too just to be safe). She told us to come in again today because she wanted to do a bit more of the treatment on my mom's bad eye. But my mom's just happy to be going home for the night. Friday: My mom, dad and I head back down to the hospital for 10am where my mom had more of the treatment. We also found out more about the 3 types of eye drops that I have to put in her eyes which makes me feel a hell of a lot better. My mom has to go on Monday morning at 9am to the doctor's office to have her eye checked out, to make sure that it's okay now. ***** As I said, what a week. Hopefully the glaucoma is gone and hopefully it didn't do any damage. I'm pretty sure that the placement agency will have to replace me at that company, but honestly I don't care. My mom apologized yesterday about me missing work, but I hated it anyway. I just checked my email and had one from the immigration law firm. The guy told me that since he has no idea at all how long it'll take for the freeze to be lifted, I should treat the situation as if I didn't get the job. Meaning, I shouldn't put my life on hold for this job, but keep looking. He said that if I find a really good job, then great. If I don't like the job I have when he calls, then I can quit. So, no biggee. It's disappointing, but I think a part of me knew that I should keep searching. Anyway, hopefully this is the end of the drama. |
