2003-12-07 Winter is Here When we left Montreal yesterday morning to head up north, there was absolutely no snow on the ground. There was actually no snow until we were getting pretty close to the village my grandmother lives in. Unless you were outside experiencing the bitter winds and cold air, you could look out the window and swear it was only the beginning of November. Today, there are piles of snow, people shoveling, snow-blowers roaring, and snow removal trucks clearing driveways. It started snowing last night sometime and continued on until this afternoon. Now the sky is slowly clearing and the moon is shining down upon fresh, glittering snow. Winter is here. Oh yay. * The weekend was good, relaxing. My mom and I went shopping, though I had to keep avoiding her in the store because she was buying stocking-stuffers for my sister and I, and I had fun working with two shopping lists - my own and my mom's (for her regular stuff). Then I came back to my nanny's, chatted for awhile, drank white wine, worked on The Book, had cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes and yellow beans (very good winter meal), put my nanny's Xmas tree up, and watched a movie, "Frailty". I've been wanting to rent that movie for awhile, but I didn't know whether or not my parents and grandmother would like it. Yesterday I figured that since they're opening up to good horror movies, even if this one ended up supernaturally-based, they wouldn't mind too much. It stars Matthew McConaughey (yum) who tells the story of when he was a little boy and his father (Bill Paxton) woke up one day with the idea that an angel of God had trusted him and his two sons with the mission of ridding the world of "demons" who disguised themselves as humans. It's really quite good, and if you like that type of movie, then I recommend it to you. After the movie, I returned to working on The Book, then headed up to bed where I curled up with the Greg Iles book, which is fabulous, by the way. * And speaking of The Book. I decided to remove something that had no real point in the story and which also actually hampered it. I thought that was simple enough, and was quite pleased that those six weeks of not working on it had made my view of it a bit more objective. And then I realized how much reworking the deleting of this one stupid element that had no real point created. For the past couple of chapters I've had to rewrite scenes, figure out how to keep the important stuff without this element as background. I know, I know, that's all part of the writing game, but man. There's still one more occasion where it pops up (that I remember anyway, there might be more), but then I think I'm home-free... Until I decide that something else is unnecessary again. * Well, that's about it for now. I should be off to do some more work before dinner. I hope you all had a great weekend too! |
